Japan Spot Power Price Hits 4 Year High of 31 Yen per kWh

Wholesale electricity rates in Japan surged more than 25% in a week as scheduled plant maintenance reduced generation during a spike in fuel expenses. Costs in the Kansai region jumped 61%, while rates in Tokyo and Chubu each rose 19%, exchange data shows. The current price of 31 yen per kilowatt-hour is roughly triple the 10 yen level seen one year ago.

The price surge puts pressure on a power grid that relies primarily on imported liquefied natural gas and coal. Market volatility is expected to increase as Asian and European buyers compete for the same energy cargoes before winter, with Europe's gas storage currently only 74.5% full.
