Elon Musk said more than 200 neocloud operators will likely face consolidation or failure because lenders have largely stopped providing capital to companies that rely solely on AI data center revenue. Musk warned that these firms are seeing a shut-off in access to money as debt markets shift toward prioritizing investment-grade companies with substantial revenue streams independent of the AI buildout.
The warning comes amidmounting credit stress in AI infrastructure, with debt issuance for the sector falling from $113B in June to $23B in September. Approximately 46% of bonds issued to finance U.S. data centers this year are junk-rated, double the share from 2025. CoreWeave, a leading neocloud provider, has seen its shares slide and its junk bond yields climb to 15%.
