Darya Shipilova, 28, a technician at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute, died overnight Oct. 1–2 after developing severe pneumonia. Reports that she broke a test tube containing live plague bacteria remain unconfirmed. Russia’s health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor denies a laboratory accident occurred and says testing found no pathogen connected to her work. It describes her diagnosis as “pneumonia of unknown etiology.”
Five medical facilities reportedly imposed quarantine restrictions, and an aluminum plant introduced mandatory masks. Baikalsk authorities deleted a warning advising residents to limit travel to Shelekhov roughly two hours after publishing it. Local media also alleged that REN TV removed five reports about the illness. The White House continues to monitor the suspected plague case and related quarantines.
