The Department of Labor revised initial claims for the week ending October 3 to 198,000 from the previously reported 197,000. Continuing claims for that same week fell 4,000 to 1.71 million, compared to a 1.709 million estimate and 1.714 million in the prior period. Market analyst Kevin Gordon noted that these stable numbers continue to support the case for the Federal Reserve to increase interest rates.
