Students, teachers, parents and unions marched across France on Tuesday in the movement's biggest day of demonstrations yet. The Interior Ministry put morning turnout at about 86,000, excluding Paris. Around 891 high schools had classes partly or fully suspended as protesters continued blockades and demanded better learning conditions.
Police fired tear gas at protesters in Paris, Lyon and Strasbourg. The protests, now in their third week, center on teacher shortages, overcrowded classrooms, long school days and deteriorating buildings, with demonstrators demanding more education funding and resources.
