A longtime associate of Secretary of State Marco Rubio received a prison term for covertly promoting the interests of the Venezuelan government. Former GOP Representative David Rivera worked as an unregistered agent for the regime of Nicolas Maduro to influence U.S. officials from his base in Miami.

Rivera was sentenced to 10 years in prison for his involvement in a $50 million lobbying scheme. The court found that the former congressman operated the secret influence operation to sway federal policy on behalf of Maduro's administration.
