Darya Shipilova, 28, died Oct. 2 after developing severe pneumonia. About 200 contacts were placed under medical observation, and Russian authorities ended precautionary measures after nearly 5,000 laboratory tests found no dangerous pathogens. The WHO has sought details about the cause of the pneumonia and the pathogen that prompted the measures; plague and the alleged laboratory exposure remain unconfirmed.
Primorsky Krai plans to purchase 500 protective anti-plague suits, while Yakutia is buying protective equipment and Karelia is buying filters for such suits. Separately, a Samara clinic purchased eight suits under a tender announced Aug. 12, before the illness reports emerged. The regional Health Ministry described that purchase as a routine replacement of expired equipment.
