Politico issued a correction on its report about White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles after the administration threatened “unspecified consequences” unless the story was retracted. The updated editor’s note states that an earlier version, including its headline, mischaracterized Wiles’s involvement in former Press Secretary Katie Zacharia’s Fox News interview with Sean Hannity, and that follow up reporting showed Wiles “offered positive reinforcement” but had no direct role in setting it up.
Politico had originally reported that Wiles helped arrange the Thursday night Hannity segment, which one source had called a “sanctioned hit” on Zacharia. Former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer mocked the outlet over the reversal, writing that Politico was “forced to walk back false story about Susie Wiles after @WhiteHouse brings the receipts.”
