The United Arab Emirates’ candidate for UN secretary-general, Lana Nusseibeh, received seven favorable votes, six against, and two abstentions in the Security Council’s first straw poll to succeed Antonio Guterres. Nusseibeh finished fourth in the informal vote, which was led by Costa Rica’s Rebeca Grynspan with 11 favorable votes. The Council is seeking to resolve a deadlock in the selection process before Guterres’ term ends Dec 31, a contest that saw Turkey nominate Feridun Sinirlioglu shortly after the most recent tally.
