A minister from the Gulf has officially entered the competition to replace the retiring chief of the United Nations on January 1. Lana Nusseibeh, the UAE’s envoy to the UN and EU, has arrived in New York and taken leave from her official duties to campaign for the post. Her bid comes after an October 16 secret ballot in which every current candidate was effectively blocked by at least one permanent member of the Security Council.
The selection process is currently deadlocked, with the three leading candidates each receiving two “discourage” votes in the latest straw poll. The United States reportedly opposes all current figures on the list, while it continues to owe the organization approximately $4.2 billion in unpaid dues. President Trump has signaled he wants a leader who will broker peace deals and cut expenses by eliminating more than 80 special rapporteur mandates.
