Her departure follows a Wall Street Journal report that she pressed Trump donor Eric Deters to pay her $100,000 American Express bill before her July 2025 Senate confirmation hearing while offering help with administration officials. Deters said he never paid. Her lawyer disputed the messages’ authenticity and said she was owed money for speaking engagements. In her departure statement, Guilfoyle said, “These allegations are false, and I intend to vigorously defend my name, my reputation, and my integrity.”
The State Department’s inspector general is investigating Guilfoyle and the embassy she leads, NBC News reported. The Journal reported that the inquiry includes whether she accepted improper gifts or favors, following a recording in which she described travel funded by Greek businessmen. Her lawyers said she followed State Department travel and gift rules. House Oversight Committee Democrats have requested financial and phone records by Oct. 22.
