The Yang-Mills Working Group, the external physics collaboration led by 2004 Nobel laureate David Gross at UC Santa Barbara’s Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics, issued a formal statement responding to calls from the Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence for the immediate release of OpenAI’s withheld physics proofs. Earlier in the day, the advisory body demanded that OpenAI publish the natural language outputs and Lean formalizations behind its claimed four dimensional existence proofs for pure Yang-Mills theory, quantum chromodynamics and a unified completion of the Standard Model.
OpenAI had deferred the release of the physics materials to Gross’s review panel, which includes Michael Douglas, Igor Klebanov, Nikita Nekrasov and Clay Mathematics Institute co-founder Arthur Jaffe. By contrast, OpenAI published the raw AI proofs and Lean verification files directly to GitHub for its two other claimed breakthroughs: a resolution of the local smoothing and Kakeya conjectures across all dimensions and a refutation of the 1999 Exponential Time Hypothesis.
