Iran Threatens Death Penalty for Owning Starlink Terminals

Tehran’s cyberspace chief described SpaceX's network as a 'tool of war' and stated the state possesses the technology to disable these devices. Iran threatens the death penalty if the possession of a Starlink dish is classified as espionage, while users face six months to two years in prison and distributors up to five years. The deputy technology minister warned that the government might cut electricity to the entire country during the next civil crisis because the satellite service bypasses Iran’s national network.

SpaceX currently provides the satellite service to Iran for free. This escalation follows a January crackdown in which the state shut down the internet and killed thousands of protesters, while smuggled terminals were used to upload footage of the violence. Tehran is now considering tighter internal internet controls and plans to share its terminal-disabling systems with friendly regimes.
