The discrepancy is relevant to Omar’s account that she derived US citizenship through her father at age 17 in 2000. That pathway generally required a child to be under 18 when a parent naturalized, along with other conditions. An Oct. 4, 1981, birthdate would mean she was 18 at the start of 2000 and turned 19 that year; an Oct. 4, 1982, birthdate would mean she was 17 until October.
Federal investigators have issued grand jury subpoenas to Omar’s relatives, including her sister Sahra Noor, as they examine possible false information in family immigration documents, the New York Times reported. Homeland Security Investigations agents searched her Washington home Monday under a court-authorized warrant. No charges against Omar have been announced. She has denied wrongdoing and called the search “an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement.”
