The violence erupted on the sidelines of Saturday's nationwide protests over rising living costs and public service cuts, which the Interior Ministry estimated drew 550,000 people across France, including 110,000 in Paris. Rioters torched the 143 year old city hall in Limoges, causing its bell tower and roof to collapse, set fire to a tourism office in Lyon, briefly stormed city halls in Marseille and Lille, vandalized a Paris synagogue and looted stores across more than a dozen cities.
Saturday's marches brought together Yellow Vest demonstrators, labor unions and high school students who had spent weeks blockading hundreds of campuses over teacher shortages and classroom conditions. The unrest comes six months before the 2027 presidential election, as the government attempts to rein in public spending that stands at 57.2% of GDP alongside a budget deficit of 5.1% of GDP and debt at 115% of GDP.
