The fire erupted on Oct 17 during nationwide protests against the cost of living, during which several hundred people used a battering ram to force entry into the 143 year old building. The destruction caused the roof and a 43 meter bell tower to collapse, destroying irreplaceable murals and Haviland porcelain crests. The landmark, which had survived the Prussians and two world wars, was left as a stone shell with its interior largely gone.
