The deployment follows a Sept. 26 incident in Starr County near Garceno, Texas, where U.S. Coast Guard crews encountered gunfire from the Mexican side while intercepting migrants during a joint federal interdiction operation. Coast Guard personnel returned fire, and no injuries or damage to assets were reported. U.S. authorities have not identified the shooters, but the Los Metros faction of the Cártel del Golfo, which is affiliated with the CJNG, controls that area of the border.
