A wave of election results has handed the Democratic Party control of more than half of the nation’s state attorneys general seats. The shift comes as five offices previously held by Republicans flip to Democratic control, including the race in Iowa where newcomer Nate Willems defeated incumbent Brenna Bird.
The flip of these offices expands the legal capacity for Democrats to challenge the policies of President Trump in court. In Iowa, the victory returns the state’s top legal office to the Democrats for the first time since 2022, ending the tenure of Bird and the previous multi-decade hold on the seat by Tom Miller.
