The current Bundibugyo strain has caused the deadliest outbreak in the history of the DRC and the second largest ever globally. The Congolese National Public Health Institute reports 8,300 confirmed cases and more than 4,000 deaths, with a case fatality rate of 48.4%. The World Health Organization warns that the virus is outpacing containment efforts and has already infected a Doctors Without Borders staff member who was evacuated to the Netherlands for treatment.
