The Congolese National Public Health Institute has recorded 8,300 laboratory-confirmed cases and more than 4,000 deaths, making this the nation's deadliest epidemic and the second-largest ever globally. The current Bundibugyo strain has a case fatality rate of 48.4%. In response, researchers are trialing an experimental preventive pill with over 250 participants to protect those exposed to the virus.
