Panama declared a national state of emergency over the weekend after the October 9 magnitude 7.7 earthquake damaged homes and infrastructure across its central provinces. Nearly 900 homes and at least 14 bridges were damaged, and more than 200 aftershocks have followed the quake.
More than 2,000 residents were affected. Authorities are distributing supplies despite damage to roads. The earthquake injured 27 people, with no deaths reported, while Panama Canal operations remain normal.
The US has pledged $5 million in aid. American disaster teams are conducting structural assessments of hospitals, water treatment facilities and schools as part of the State Department's response.
