Roskomnadzor, the Russian state communications watchdog, has added Apple and Microsoft to its registry of information dissemination organizers, a designation that legally compels them to share user records with the government. The firms must now store data on the actions and communications of their Russian users on servers located within the country for three years and surrender the content of those messages to the Federal Security Service (FSB) upon request.
The directive affects several key services, including iCloud Mail, FaceTime and iMessage for Apple, and Microsoft’s calling and work platforms. Both companies risk heavy fines or a complete block of their services in Russia if they refuse to comply with the data retention and handover orders.
