Hackers Use GMO Internet Cloud Breach to Execute Unauthorized Trades at 70+ Brokerages

Japan's GMO Internet is compensating customers for verified trading losses after hackers breached the company's cloud VPS service used by foreign-exchange traders. The attackers used stolen customer credentials to execute unauthorized trades across more than 70 securities and FX firms, and planted malware on servers. GMO Internet said up to 26,739 servers may have been affected by the breach.

The company has refused a ransom demand and has submitted communication records to the police cybercrime countermeasures department for investigation. GMO Internet requested that the Japanese government utilize its new active cyber defense powers to trace and neutralize the attackers' infrastructure in this instance.
