Major cities remained largely calm Monday night after rare peacetime curfews took effect across parts of Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux and Nice, while Marseille banned public demonstrations and northern cities including Lille, Douai and Denain imposed restrictions for minors. Retailers across the country began assessing damage and filing insurance claims Tuesday after nearly 3,000 stores were ransacked and looted.
The security buildup follows weekend cost of living and education demonstrations that drew an estimated 550,000 to 800,000 people across 140 cities and escalated into arson and clashes. Authorities arrested roughly 2,400 people and reported nearly 1,000 security personnel injured as rioters torched Lyon's tourist office and the 143-year-old Limoges City Hall, causing its bell tower to collapse.
