The capacity proposal follows the recent completion of a four-stage update that halved Solana's slot time from 400ms to 200ms at epoch 1053 to increase block frequency. The network is also preparing for a subsequent upgrade known as Alpenglow.

The chief executive of Anza initiated a GitHub discussion to increase the amount of data and processing a single Solana block can handle. The proposal by @bw_solana would raise the network's block compute limit from 50M to 100M units in five phases: 60M, 70M, 80M, 90M, and 100M units. If adopted, this change would enable a throughput of 500M compute units per second, which is twice the ceiling Solana had before the network began its slot-time reductions. The discussion remains at the idea stage as of Oct. 10, with no formal improvement proposal or set activation date.
