The Justice Department sued California and Los Angeles County after officials missed a 48 hour deadline to verify citizenship for names provided on an encrypted thumb drive compiled by US Citizenship and Immigration Services and Homeland Security Investigations. In the same court fight, Los Angeles County election officials stated in a filing that they have no independent way to verify US citizenship and rely on voters' attestations under penalty of perjury. Federal prosecutors have also charged 28 lawful permanent residents from the 20,000 name list with election crimes.
