Alfozan, a 35 year old Saudi national arrested on Oct. 9, is charged with attempting to intercept oral communications after OpenAI found an encrypted audio recorder hidden behind a television in an executive conference room where company leaders met with government officials. Prosecutors urged the court to deny bail, arguing Alfozan had "considerable support" from Riyadh, including frequent WhatsApp contact with an unnamed Saudi royal who tried to recruit him to a Saudi AI initiative and a Saudi military official who paid for his wife and infant son to fly out of the US after his arrest. OpenAI fired Alfozan and said it found no indication that model weights, source code or customer data were accessed or taken.
