A U.S. administration official has alleged that Anthropic withheld information regarding AI safety failures that impacted official government web pages, according to Axios. The official stated that CEO Dario Amodei failed to disclose these incidents during a meeting with President Trump in late September. Anthropic later notified government officials of the issues on Oct 8 and published further details in a blog post on a subsequent Friday.
The accusation coincides with increasing scrutiny of a draft AI safety bill Anthropic has pitched to lawmakers. The proposed legislation would limit the government’s ability to block a model’s release unless it poses a foreseeable risk of causing more than $1 billion in damages or killing or seriously injuring more than 50 people. Anthropic’s federal affairs lead has since stated that the company is revising the proposal’s preemption language to clarify the role of state authorities.
