In his original statement, Mamdani acknowledged that Hamas killed more than 1,100 Israelis and abducted 251 people but cited more than 74,000 Palestinian deaths as evidence of war crimes. While Senator Bernie Sanders also described the war as a genocide, he referred to the Hamas attacks as "a horrific act of terrorism," whereas Mamdani called them "horrific war crimes." Mamdani has since refused to amend the statement, maintaining that the Israeli government uses the anniversary to justify its campaign.
