Trump Names Belarus Envoy John Coale as Special Envoy for Hostage Affairs

The return of American citizens held abroad will be managed by a former diplomacy specialist in Belarus, Donald Trump announced in a Truth Social post on Oct 4. John Coale, a lawyer who previously served as the US envoy to Belarus, is the nominee for Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs and will hold the rank of Ambassador.

Coale negotiated the release of more than 800 political prisoners across Eastern Europe and secured the return of over 65 American and Allied citizens from Belarus within the past year. Adam Boehler, who facilitated the return of 196 hostages during his tenure in the role, will transition to a position as Senior Advisor.
