The FSB detained the 34 year old reporter in Sakhalin on suspicion of gathering intelligence on Russian defense capabilities and military personnel deployed from the Kuril Islands. This is the first arrest of a foreign journalist in Russia since the 2024 release of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich. Relations have deteriorated following Moscow's demands for the extradition of International Criminal Court officials and Vladimir Putin's visit to the disputed island of Iturup in August.
