OpenAI is preparing a wide-ranging government relations campaign starting after the midterm elections on Tuesday to adjust its strategy for the new political landscape in Washington. The company intends to lobby Congress for the implementation of mandatory “speed limits” on the most capable AI models and will attempt to change the nomenclature of its infrastructure by renaming data centers as “AI compute campuses” to mitigate public opposition to the facilities.
The company has been assembling these regulatory and branding proposals since August, specifically accounting for a potential Democratic majority in the House. Chris Lehane, OpenAI’s chief global affairs officer, said that artificial intelligence will be a central issue in the 2028 presidential election.
