In the House, Republican Brian Fitzpatrick plans bipartisan legislation to block all US purchases of Russian oil and seek a floor vote through a discharge petition. Republican Don Bacon agreed to be an original cosponsor. Former Vice President Mike Pence separately urged Trump to rescind the deal immediately, saying America should not be “throwing a lifeline to Putin’s war machine.”
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent defended the agreement Sunday, saying the administration would proceed using existing legal authorities and that cheaper diesel would benefit Americans. Treasury issued a temporary license allowing Russian diesel transactions through April 7, 2027, after Trump announced his agreement with Vladimir Putin on Friday. Trump outlined deliveries of more than 300,000 tons immediately, 500,000 tons in November and 1 million tons thereafter, with another 3 million tons dependent on the condition of Russia’s refineries.
