PJM's Power Prices Hit $1,021 MWh in Grid Emergency

The largest electricity grid in the US has activated emergency measures after a short-lived heat wave in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic coincided with planned off season maintenance. PJM has seen 62 GW of generation go offline for repairs, causing the supply for 67 million people to tighten and triggering crisis protocols to stabilize the network.

Spot electricity prices jumped to $1,021/MWh as of Oct. 14 due to the capacity shortage. Power supplies are also tightening across other regional grids that collectively serve approximately one third of the US population, as heat waves clash with scheduled facility shutdowns.
