The Chilean government declared a state of emergency after the weather event displaced more than 1,000 residents and injured at least six people. Authorities reported that 14.4 cm of rain fell, triggering a surge of water that inundated a university, hospitals, and schools. In one instance, a public bus was swept two blocks through a residential area, forcing passengers to climb onto the roof before the vehicle slammed into rocks.
