The Navy's fiscal year 2027 budget request funded one destroyer—down from two in FY26 and three in FY25—and designated that ship for HII’s Ingalls shipyard in Mississippi. Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao had cited a backlog at the Maine yard, including 11 destroyers on contract with seven under construction and four not yet started, as the reason for the initial request. Deputy Secretary Steve Feinberg stated the yard must resolve legacy production challenges to sustain recent improvements.
