Prison Riot Kills 10 in Mexico's Cartel War Zone

World12 days ago

Sixteen people were injured on Thursday when a fight broke out at the El Castillo Penitentiary Centre in Mazatlan, Sinaloa. Nine inmates and one visitor were killed in the clash before security guards regained control of the facility, leaving prosecutors to investigate the cause of the violence.

The riot comes as Sinaloa has been embroiled in a war between drug cartels since 2024, during which regional prisons have become frequent targets. In May, a similar fight at the Aguaruto prison in Culiacán resulted in the deaths of seven inmates.
