Opposition leader Avigdor Lieberman formally petitioned Israel’s attorney general on Monday to open a criminal treason investigation into Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accusing him of pressuring security chiefs over the past month to drag the country into war with Iran ahead of Tuesday’s election to avoid defeat. Netanyahu’s office, Defense Minister Israel Katz and the Israel Defense Forces all issued statements rejecting reports of pre-election strike plans and a clash at the top, with the military stating that its operational considerations are “solely security-related, professional, matter-of-fact, and statesmanlike, and any other discourse is misleading and irrelevant.”
