The Democratic Party took control of the governorship and four other senior executive and legislative positions in Texas following the Nov 4 vote. In addition to winning the governor’s mansion, the party captured the seats for the state senate, the attorney general, the lieutenant governor, and the railroad commissioner, while also winning the races for the positions of state comptroller and the land and agriculture commissioners.
Among the Republican losses was Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, who had consistently opposed the legalization of casino gambling in Texas. His defeat removes a primary legislative obstacle to the expansion of the state’s gaming industry.
