Nielsen data showed that Fox News averaged 1.1 million total day viewers in October, the network’s lowest monthly performance since December 2023. Fox Corp CEO Lachlan Murdoch attributed the decline to “viewer fatigue” among the audience ahead of the Nov 3 midterm elections, while Donald Trump contested the explanation on Truth Social, claiming the network’s ratings fell 27% because it focused too heavily on Democratic politicians.
The slump represents the most severe run-up to a national election for any of the three largest U.S. cable news networks in the last decade, with prime-time viewership dropping 28% in the four weeks before the vote. Mark Lazarus, CEO of Versant and the parent company of MS NOW, disputed the narrative of news fatigue, stating his networks are not experiencing a similar downturn and may be gaining viewers from other outlets.
