The private equity firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice has entered talks to acquire payment processor Global Payments in a potential leveraged buyout. According to the Financial Times, the firm is partnering with GTCR, the company’s largest shareholder, to pursue a deal that would value the processor at more than $40 billion.
Global Payments shares rose approximately 10% on the news, though no agreement has been reached. The potential acquisition would rank among the largest buyouts of its kind in history, targeting a company with a market value of about $23 billion and more than $17 billion in net debt. The bid comes after a share price slump that drew interest from activist investor Elliott Management.
