The candidacy of Lana Nusseibeh for the top post at the United Nations has prompted a geopolitical clash between the UAE and Iran as critics launch a worldwide effort to block her appointment. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf accused the Emirati minister of state of using the run to promote “Greater Israel” interests and to hide her government’s role in a genocide in Sudan. UAE presidential diplomatic adviser Anwar Gargash responded that Ghalibaf’s claims lacked objectivity and noted that the UN was created to resolve conflicts rather than settle scores.
