Serco and other commercial tugs moved HMS Protector across the coast from Teesside to Devonport following a mechanical failure on the vessel. The ship did not experience an engine breakdown at sea, despite reports from some media outlets, but required a tow for the duration of the trip including a handover off the coast of Plymouth.

The vessel is the only ice patrol ship in the Royal Navy. Its future operation remains uncertain following the defect that necessitated the tow.
