The Liberian flagged Aframax Rio, which is 247 meters long, was struck by an unmanned vessel on Oct. 6 while transporting approximately 100,000 tonnes of crude oil to India. Russia's Transport Ministry confirmed the rescue of the 23 member Indian crew without casualties. The attack follows recent strikes on other Black Sea merchant shipping, including the sinking of the Royad Mammadov and Alfa Watan, and led to the temporary closure of public beaches in Sochi and the Sirius region.
