Shares in artificial intelligence and semiconductor companies led a recovery in US equities on Nov 6, with the Nasdaq 100 rising 2.5%. Nvidia saw the largest gain in market value, adding $305B as its shares rose 7%, followed by Alphabet, which gained $107B on a 3.1% increase. The semiconductor index climbed more than 6%, bolstered by a 13.4% jump in AMD shares, which added $89B, and a 8.4% gain for Micron, which added $62B.
Despite the total market valuation increase of $850B and a 1.2% gain for the S&P 500, the rally lacked broad participation. More than half of the stocks in the S&P 500 finished the day lower, while the Dow and small cap indices remained flat. Defensive holdings, including Coca-Cola, Johnson & Johnson, and Walmart, all closed in the red.
