The Department of Energy and National Institutes of Health have joined a consortium of technology firms to create a digital infrastructure for cellular biology. This effort, called the Virtual Biology Initiative, has $1.8B in committed funding to assemble the largest open, AI-ready biological dataset ever created to help artificial intelligence predict how biology works and treat disease. Funding for the project includes $500M from the Zuckerberg-backed Biohub, more than $500M from the DOE, and $500M from the NIH, while Meta, Google DeepMind, and Isomorphic Labs are contributing $300M.
