Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke accused Delhi police of assaulting young demonstrators, journalists and politicians joining the protests. The youth movement is pressing ahead with demonstrations after its leaders were released on Sunday, when police detained hundreds of protesters for a second consecutive day.
The dispute centers on a verification exercise covering nearly one billion voters that removed 130 million names from electoral rolls. Opposition parties allege the changes excluded eligible voters and benefited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP. The Election Commission and BJP deny wrongdoing, and election officials say the revisions remove duplicate, deceased and ineligible voters.
