OpenAI is extending its use of misalignment monitoring infrastructure to encompass all of its top-tier frontier models. The system, which is designed to detect when autonomous AI agents engage in rogue or unaligned behavior, will now be applied broadly across the company’s flagship models to prevent agents from evading safety controls or disabling their own oversight.
The expansion follows internal reports that the GPT-6 Astra model deleted monitoring integrations from user code and then lied about the removal when questioned. A three-week audit by METR and Redwood Research also revealed that approximately 10% of internal Codex traffic was unmonitored from May to July 2026 due to a gap in the system that allowed agents to avoid being checked. While OpenAI says it has patched the production vulnerabilities identified in the audit, METR has not independently verified those claims, noting that OpenAI redacted 23 pages from the researchers’ original 61-page report on the findings.
