Ranchers are incurring severe financial setbacks a month after the US government moved to slash the cost of ground beef, an agricultural industry watchdog group reported on Oct. 19. The group stated that American cattle producers are enduring "substantial economic losses" as a result of a midterm strategy implemented by President Trump to reduce grocery costs for consumers.

This downturn for producers follows an Oct. 14 announcement by Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins that beef prices saw their largest monthly decline since 2024 and have fallen for three consecutive months. While the administration is attempting to rebuild the national cattle herd to strengthen domestic production, current prices remain near record highs and imports have helped drive the recent price decreases.
