Seventeen nations will participate in the Steadfast Noon exercises from October 13 to 23 in Italy to practice nuclear deterrence. NATO officials stated the drills are routine and predictable and will use no live nuclear weapons to avoid miscalculation and further escalation.

The maneuvers follow threats from Russia to strike NATO territory, including the potential use of nuclear weapons, after allied exercises took place near Kaliningrad in August. The alliance is seeking to ease tensions with Moscow before the scheduled October start date.
